In Axis of the Silent Exchange, Michaels orchestrates a tension between presence and absence, gesture and void. Three glyphic forms — golden thresholds with darkened centers — hover against a textured black field, each suggesting portals, echoes, or relics from an unknowable order. A vertical spine of pigment, punctuated by mineral blues and visceral reds, bisects the composition like a signal beamed through space and time — a communicative tether between disparate forces.
The black field is not merely background but a living surface layered and subtly inscribed, evoking a sacred architecture or ancient ledger. This central vertical filament — equal parts suture and axis — bridges upper and lower realms, inviting the viewer to contemplate the invisible transmissions that pass between us: prayer, memory, magnetism, silence.
Michaels’ use of sculptural impasto and minimal form channels the sacred geometry of lost languages, offering the viewer not a decipherable code, but a field of resonance. The work asks not what is said, but what is exchanged — in the quiet, between pulses.
